John Bunyan was a Christian writer and preacher,
born in 1628. In 1655 he became a deacon and began preaching with
marked success from the start. In 1658 he was indicted for
preaching without a license. He kept on, however, and was
imprisoned several times convicted of preaching his faith without
a license. In over twelve years of confinement Bunyan wrote
numerous books and pamphlets, including Part I of A Pilgrim's
Progress.
