A Study Commentary on 1 Corinthians |
|
 |
Old Words, New Life Reflections on 40 Key Old Testament Words |
|
| Author: Naylor, Peter |
Author: Winter, David |
 |
 |
|
Although 1
Corinthians was originally written with the needs of the Corinthian
congregation in mind, Paul aimed his words at ‘all who in every place
call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, theirs and ours’ (1:2).
Because ‘theirs and ours’ connects directly with ‘in every place’, the
reference is almost certainly to all the churches in which he had an
influence. This claim flies in the face of much modern scholarship.
Paul’s epistle is of abiding relevance, challenge and comfort, and
this portion of the Word of God is worthy of investigation for its own
sake because it tells of Jesus.

David Winter offers an accessible way of becoming better acquainted
with the Old Testament - what was, after all, the text that Jesus knew
as ‘Scripture’. Looking at 40 key words from ‘atonement’ to ‘Yahweh’,
he provides a Bible passage, helpful explanation and concluding
reflection for each one. You can use Old Words, New Life as a book for
daily Bible study, or as a handy reference tool to check out a
particular word that crops up as you are reading the Old Testament.

'This is a
book about the local church, the most important spiritual institution
in human history... Although we are saved individually, as Christians
we are born into a community... It is my hope that this book will
enable you not only to understand what the church is, but also inspire
you to help make your place of worship all that God intends it to
be...'
